Shepherds Pie

Shepherds Pie
This is an absolute must try if you think you might like it. Creamy mashed potatoes, tender, juicy shredded beef and peas, green beans, corn and carrots.

It's actually light on the veggies and heavy on the delicious, high quality meat. It costs a shocking $1.79 for a 1 lb pie which happens to be a really great meal for kids, as well. My toddler loves it.

It has 2 servings according to the package (really 1 serving for most adults.) Each of the two servings has 190 calories, 3.5g of fat, 590mg sodium (25% RDA) and 18g of protein.

All I did was vent the plastic cover and bake it for 25 minutes. I wasn't expecting anything special. I was also half-expecting mystery meat of some kind. As the review above states, it was full of high-quality lean beef that tasted very good. I was surprised and pleased that what amounts to an upscale TV dinner, could be so satisfying. Definitely a great back-up dinner for those nights when you really don't want to lift a finger in the kitchen but you know a bowl of cold cereal isn't going to cut it (I have many of those nights).

So, so delicious...in every bite that doesn't have a green bean. Unfortunately these don't seem to microwave well at all, and their flavor overpowers everything else in the pie. Still, this is good enough that it's worth picking around them.

I was pleased with this dish. Tons of meat and definitely a keeper. It seemed as if when cooking in the oven, the potatoes remained a bit more watery than I would have liked, so I will try removing more of the cover and see what happens. I didn't notice an overload of green beans, either!!
Some people love pot pie, I like shepherd's pie. I've been going to TJ's for about 20 years now off and on (as I have spent a lot of time off an on, outside of CA) and every few years I forget that I've had the shepherd's pie and buy it again. I see it in the freezer case and say "Great! I love shepherd's pie!" Then, after my first forkful, I groan inwardly and say "darn it, I forgot".
The mashed potatoes, beef, sauce, and sparse vegetables all taste exactly the same. Like nothing, or rather like frozen cardboard. No amount of salt will help as salt is a flavor enhancer and when there's nothing to enhance, it just tastes like salty cardboard. It amazes me that something this flavorless has managed to withstand the test of time, while other, far more deserving items are phased out (the frozen Spicy Chicken Sausage Greek Pizza was outstanding).
I guess if you are considering this or cold cereal on a winter night, I can see the choice would be clear, otherwise I'd pass.

I prefer making my own shepherd's pie. I tried this one and it didn't even compare. I thought it was flavorless and just not what I was expecting. It was a bummer, too.

Okay, so maybe it's not really homemade-tasting, but you have to admit, it's good for frozen food. Before putting it in the oven, you might want to defrost it in the microwave; the times on the back of the box aren't quite sufficient.

Also, it's pretty low in calories considering that it's beef.

The meat inside is really good, and the mashed potatoes are nice. The veggies are so-so. I'd buy again, but not all the time.

Sorry all, this ended up in the back yard. Way too gamey meat, mushy bland vegetables. Never again.

Kinda bland and a little watery when I had it. Definitely not worth the $3.99 I paid for it.

Almost everything I buy at TJ's is great. This was an exception. It was watery and had a most unappetizing smell. I took one small taste and threw it into the garbage.

This was so bad that it was the only time I've actually gone back on the next visit and mentioned how lousy it was and got a credit at the register.
