Steel Cut Oatmeal

Steel Cut Oatmeal
I am in love with these little frozen cups of breakfast joy. If you've never had steal cut oatmeal before, you have to try this. I don't even like regular oatmeal-- it's mushy and gross and sticks to my bowls. This stuff, on the other hand, is like a little cup of heaven. The oatmeal is smooth and had great texture-- almost like barley. Very toothsome. I mix in some raisens or frozen berries, though it does come slightly sweetened. Delicious and very healthy!

Yes, it's much quicker than cooking steel cut oats from scratch. And, big yes, it's much better tasting than instant oatmeal. But I, too, found the texture a little too mushy and that the shape does not facilitate even heating. I had to take it out after a minute or so and chop it into pieces so the middle would thaw!

Oatmeal in general needs a little help so I don't hold that against the product. However, I'll be freezing my own steel cut oatmeal from now on. Thanks to TJ's for the idea if not for a stellar product!

Definitely beats Quakers. To me, it has the perfect texture-not too mushy but a nice soft oatmealy feeling.

i did not like this at all.

Give it a squirt of maple syrup//////YUMMY!!!!
I admit this was better than instant. I recently bought a rice cooker with a timer and set up my steel cut oatmeal the night before, set the timer and I have piping hot, long cooking delicious oatmeal waiting for me when I awake. Much better tasting than this frozen alternative

Looks like a lot of people like it, but not me!
they need FLAVOR. i do a strange thing for flavor because i love the creaminess but not the blandness...so i have a case of quaker instant oatmeal...so i strain the packets to get the flavor powder out and throw it in the steel cut oats. then i blend it in a magic bullet. i know i'm weird, but it tastes amazing. i save the instant stuff for certain cookies.

I love this stuff. I can almost feel my cholesterol lowering... You can't beat the convenience and flavor of this consistently delicious product. I have it at least once a day, sometimes twice. Perfectly filling lunch during a busy work day!
Ok so it's 150 calories, but almost every comment has said you need to add some kind of sweetener (brown sugar, berries, etc). And the reason the serving size is greater than packaged oatmeal is because most of the weight is from the water already mixed in.

If you're looking for a low-calorie, perfectly sweetened, quick, and great textured oatmeal, try Dr. McDougall's Organic Instant Oatmeal, Light Maple Brown Sugar. By the way, always use the boiling water method for any instant oatmeal, microwaving makes it mushy.

Is it really only 150 calories per 'hockey puck' pack?!
bybee_queen, November 16, 2007
If it was a fraction cheaper, I would eat it every day.

I've never really been a big fan of oatmeal, but I do like it more now than I did when I was a kid. I picked up a box of this last night and had some this morning. The portion size was great and it's so quick to heat it up here in the microwave at work. It was not very thick initially, but like all oatmeal it thickened considerably after a few minutes of cooling. I really liked the chewy texture of the oats! I agree that it wasn't very sweet as packaged, but it's easy enough to doctor up to taste and still have a healthy, inexpensive and low calorie breakfast (I added a handful of Ginger Cashew granola-- yum!). I let a coworker try it and she really liked it, too. I'll be buying this every time I go to TJ's!
i NEVER could eat oatmeal. NEVER. Steel cut, pinhead, rolled...no way. NEVER could get used to the slimey texture, icky smell and cardboard taste. and what was the use of adding all kinds of syrups, fruits, nuts, etc.? may as well have cold cereal. UNTIL THIS! i reluctantly purchased this on Monday and am so glad i bought two boxes. I had the oatmeal all this week and i am going back tomorrow to buy LOTS of boxes. It is really DELICIOUS! nutty, not slimey, not runny, not gloppy. just perfect! i LOVE it and am now a convert to the oatmeal-eating world. Thank you Trader Joe's!

I switched from the instant box oatmeal from TJ's to this oatmeal. Much better for you and better tasting! Wish there were more than 2 in a package.
You can't beat the convenience factor to TJ's frozen oatmeal, as I'm certainly not able to stir a pot of steel cut oatmeal in the morning! True, the texture's not the same as oatmeal made from scratch, but this is a vast improvement over the instant stuff we grew up eating. I like mine with a spoonful of TJ's preserves (cherry, apricot or raspberry - yum!) stirred in as soon as it comes out of the microwave.

I think that these other reviews are supplied by corporate employees who are trying to boost the popularity of a losing product - this stuff is terrible! It's inferior in every way to regular old oatmeal. Can someone explain to me what I'm missing? Or are you all a bunch of robots?

I might have a weak microwave, but this oatmeal takes forever to cook. It's good and nutty, but I think I will stick to making a big batch of regular steel cut oats and reheating it on my hurried mornings.
As far as instant oatmeal goes this one has my heart. I definately appreaciated that the maple sugar flavoring wasnt like Quaker oatmeal in that when I eat that I feel like I'm downing 2 tablespoons of sugar. I ate this with a a little bit of crunchy peanut butter. The nuts in it gave it great texture and need I say more about peanut butter? Also this managed to keep me full through a day of classes.
I love TJ's Steel Cut Oatmeal. Add a handful of Raisins to give you so Potassium and I'm good to go. Couldn't sleep one night so I got up and fixed myself a bowl of TJ's Oatmeal and sleep like a baby. Tried it since with the same affect. Who needs sleeping pills when Steel Cut Oatmeal does a better job without the drugs. Try it!
