Banana Crisps
Back in March, I posted my review of Trader Joe's Banana Crisps praising their sweet taste, satisfying starchiness and crispy lightness. I marvelled how amazing these "banana babies" were what with the 40 calories and 1 gram of fat per one ounce serving (2/3 cup).

Since that time, many fans posted their own fondness for these treats as well as a healthy dose of suspicion regarding the packaging. Turns out, results from 2 independent labs (one of which I called personally) show these crisps actually have FOUR times the calories and SIX times the fat.

We called headquarters and received the following statement from a Trader Joe's representative:

"Trader Joe’s voluntarily removed off shelves all banana crisps due to a nutritional content mislabeling on the package. The banana crisps will return shortly once the nutritional panels are updated. Customers are welcome to return this product to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund or exchange.”

I could not agree more and have gone, um, bananas, over these crisps. I can't stand bananas, but love these. And as someone with a sweet tooth, they trounce potato chips. I'm addicted and have been known to call quite often when they are out of stock (several months at one point!!) to find out when more have arrived. Now I buy 8 bags at a time. Low cal and amazingly tasty. I LOVE them. See, completely bananas!
A customer told me about these when they were out of stock. When they returned, I tried them. They are light and crispy, just a little sweet. Just right! I have been know it eat a whole bag for lunch! They are healthy too. Now I stock up-just in case!
I belong the the weight watcher community. These Banana Crisps have been mentioned often. We all agree that they are GREAT for us as a snack, but the BIG and ONLY problem is that you guys keep running out of them. We are on the message boards which encompass pretty much every state. Let's get those bananas CRISPED and to our favorite TJs.
I LOVE these crisps, but I must admit I am suspicious of the low calorie content. They don't TASTE like only 40 calories per 2/3 cup. Thoughts?

I've wondered about the calorie content as well, because they are just so tasty, but the thing is, they don't have as much sugar as most banana chips, so I'm thinking it's at least close. I don't believe you'd get 6 2/3C servings from the bag, however, so I imagine one serving is slightly less then 2/3 cup.

Anyway.....I was thrilled to notice yesterday, that after almost 2 months of absence from the stores, that these babies are back.

One of my three local stores that I was stalking for them 2 months ago, found a box in hiding and threw it out on the shelf. I bought them all (like 31 bags), and fortunatly they lasted me the 2 months until I saw them yesterday. I of course bought 20 bags just in case.

The perfect chip replacement.

I am so completely addicted to these little crispy chips and am besides myself cause every store is out of them! I am eating my last bag as I write this and told my husband that he couldn't have any cause they were all mine. If they are so popular and in demand, why aren't they making more of them? And, by the way, I don't even like bananas!!
I can only get these maybe every three months at TJ's and only if I hit the store at the right time. The demand is high so the supply should be too.

Must agree with everyone else...very very good and low in calories to boot!

Has anyone noticed that the 40 calorie banana chips are not on the shelf. There is one that has the same packaging but a calore count of 150 calories. Anyone know anything about this??
i'm finding myself trying to restrict eating less than a bag a day... if i let myself run wild, i'll eat through my 12 bag stock-up until the next shipment comes in at my local tjs. seriously, these are the most fabulous snack, low in cals & only 1 g of sugar per serving. i can't get enough!!! and like everyone else said, i don't really like bananas either :)

scary when your boyfriend buys them for you as a gift...
Erin, I was wondering the same thing. A 30g serving lists only 1g of fat and 7g of carbs -- what are the other 22g? Not water! I think the nutrition info must be wrong. Does TJ's have a number one could call to ask about this?
Low fat, low sugar - so healthy. Too bad it takes so long to re-order when they run out. It's been 2 months now and I'm still waiting.
The nutrition facts basically *have to* be wrong. It is not possible for a 30g serving of something without a lot of water weight to have only 40 calories. I don't know how much fat they really have, but you're looking at a minimum of 125 or so calories, and probably closer to 150.
I learned of these yummy treats on this site, found them a week ago, bought 2 bags (why didn't I buy TEN?), became immediately addicted and turned co-workers on to them, too... then returned for more and found only the more fattening, thicker, undesirable "Banana Chips". Alas. TJs staff say that when they are stocked, they see women buying 10 bags or more apiece. Well, my husband ate a whole bag, too... so some women may have been shopping for their men, too. Anyway, I'm crisp-less in SF. : (

I work for TJs and there are many problems to the crips. One they are made in Thailand, tranportation takes months by boat. If you want to make your own get a fryer and a food processor. Trust me they are way to cheap for how much people like them. Two, I have had customers eat a case in five days. They buy 12-25 bags a time and hoard products. One the manufacture in Thai get going they should be fine but they have been out of stock more than available since they were new last Nov. Be patient it is not life or death. I too question the nutrtionals considers bananas have lots of natural sugar and carbs and these have sugar added.

First time I saw these banana crisps, I bought a couple of bags and I was addicted. They were so good - not overly sweet, not heavy and have a nice crunch. I literlally went to Trader Joes every other day for the next 4 weeks but couldn't find theml. It wasn't until two months after I gave up the serach that I saw a full shelf of them. Well, I left 4- 5 bags for the next guy/gal. Ten bags and three days later, I think the dryness and the greasy feeling starts to set in and I came off the addiction. Havn't had another bag since then. Still got 7-8 bags left. Glad I did it or I'd still be running down to TJ's every week looking for them.
I've been eating banana chips off and on for 25 years. I stopped eating them d/t the coconut oil in them, and that verana sugar, or whatever it's called. Then I saw these babies at my new TJ's in ABQ, NM, bought 'em, and while eating them, was taken to heaven! Then I went back to buy boxloads after telling my friend in NH I what I found, and that I was going to send her some 2,500 miles away- they're THAT good. Sure enough, they didn't have any, only the coconut oil fried ones that I had long ago given up- yuck! I'm glad to see these are BACK, and hopefully in our store here in the Duke city.

Crispy and lightly sweetened.
I don't really care for bananas and have never even tried a banana chip, but there's so much buzz about this product that I had to try it. I went to a store in MA and had no problem finding them. There were lots and lots of bags, in fact. (Sorry to make you jealous) I bought a bag and they in fact tasted like a potato chip, with a slight sweet taste. I polished off the bag in two days, which is unlike me. Some of them were even greasy tasting, which means I refuse to believe that they are as low in calories and fat as they say they are.

Compared to 'normal' banana chips, which have 10g of fat with 9g of it saturated per serving, these things are a lifesaver for those of us with kids that love banana chips. I don't feel as bad giving my kids a handful of 'em for snack in the afternoon. They are quite plentiful at the Shrewsbury MA store.. maybe they aren't are popular on the east coast?
