Yes, it's much quicker than cooking steel cut oats from scratch. And, big yes, it's much better tasting than instant oatmeal. But I, too, found the texture a little too mushy and that the shape does not facilitate even heating. I had to take it out after a minute or so and chop it into pieces so the middle would thaw!
Oatmeal in general needs a little help so I don't hold that against the product. However, I'll be freezing my own steel cut oatmeal from now on. Thanks to TJ's for the idea if not for a stellar product!
