Pretzel Rolls / Buns

As soon as I saw this new product on the bakery shelf, I said "Ohhh nooo" outloud. I'm a soft pretzel fanatic. I like them from the freezer case, microwaved. I like them from a vendor. I like them from a boardwalk. I love soft pretzels. Matter of fact I like them hard, too (especially thick Bavarian). I knew I'd sunk to a new low though, buying and eating Der Weinerschnitzel hot dogs just because they came on a soft pretzel bun. So good.

So, here I am standing in front of TJ's bakery table and there are the rolls.

Two per bag, they are small torpedos, but loaded with calories (240 per bun), but most importantly, SOFT. Most breads at TJ's are just too hard to bother with. They never feel fresh from the oven to me, doughy with starchy goodness. Not so, these rolls. They felt fresh baked, soft to the touch, and looked moist through the plastic. So dark on the outside, though, that they looked like cinnamon rolls.

One taste at home confirmed it, however. Big soft roll on the inside, the unmistakeable flavor of pretzel on the outside. Perfect for slicing with a heap of heated pastrami.

Baked, they'd make an excellent pretzel substitute.

Yum. So glad I bought 3 bags!

If you are looking for an artisan soft pretzel, or even one that rivals the cheap frozen variety you find at your regular supermarket, these are dissapointing at best. Not much pretzel flavor, light, fluffy bread-like texture and a strange sweet-sticky coating on the outside make these rather un-pretzel like except for their shape. Maybe it's good as a sandwich roll, but as a soft pretzel it's not even close.

I agree with grillzilla that as a PRETZEL you will be disappointed. But as pretzel flavored BREAD, it's wonderful. Makes a fabulous hot pastrami sandwich. It's the fluffy bread with pretzel flavor that I like, but it's not fair to compare it to a pretzel, when it isn't one.

Ok, I caved and bought the pretzel rolls. Why didn't I realize that I would love these things. thank god TJs is only a few miles away. Anyway.. I made the most amazing tasting sadwich with this bread. I must comment first that this bread keeps its saltyness and inner softness while toasted, I found it fabulous. Try this:

Salami and Cotswold cheese thinly sliced (You can find both of these items at TJs, but also just about anywhere). Add to one side of the bread some dijonnaise (Grey Poupon makes a creamy dijon as well, and that will work)

It's the best combo!!! I must give myself a pat on the back. I truly believe I am the only one in history to combine these 4 items. Thank me later! :P
These are a popular snack in Germany, although there they have coarse salt on top. People eat them for an afternoon pick me up or just a snack. They are not intended to replace pretzels. They do make nice buns for sausage too.
I asked about these today after not seeing them for months. They confirmed that the bakery stopped making them and they couldn't find an alternative. I am so disappointed!! My favorite TJ's product EVER!

Miss these tremendously, but, I've learned to make my own. They are not as soft and tender, but they'll do. They'll do. ::sigh::

I heard from a friend that these were back on the shelves in Chicago last week! I can't wait to get them in Massachusetts!
