Banana Crisps
(172 votes)Rate this listing
Back in March, I posted my review of Trader Joe's Banana Crisps praising their sweet taste, satisfying starchiness and crispy lightness. I marvelled how amazing these "banana babies" were what with the 40 calories and 1 gram of fat per one ounce serving (2/3 cup).
Since that time, many fans posted their own fondness for these treats as well as a healthy dose of suspicion regarding the packaging. Turns out, results from 2 independent labs (one of which I called personally) show these crisps actually have FOUR times the calories and SIX times the fat.
We called headquarters and received the following statement from a Trader Joe's representative:
"Trader Joe’s voluntarily removed off shelves all banana crisps due to a nutritional content mislabeling on the package. The banana crisps will return shortly once the nutritional panels are updated. Customers are welcome to return this product to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund or exchange.”

I read about these weeks ago and later, once at TJ's, tried to remember which banana snack was so fabulous. Bought the chocolate-covered banana chips; they were fairly good not stalker-good. Bought the regular banana chips (against my usual instinct); they were as awful. Finally found the banana crisps. These are a dream. As a total potato-chip-aholic these completely satisfy that craving without adding another inch to my waist. Love them. Need them. Want to marry them. Can't believe the 40 calorie thing either.

We like the banana chips in our house, but I have to say it would nice to also have the kind of chips that are more salty than sweet. I never find that kind of chips in this country unless it's in an Indian grocery store. But these are good too. My toddler munches on these as a healthy snack and I don't have to worry about what she's eating!

Hello everyone,
I am truly sorry to report this. I, too was a banana crisp lover. too much in fact that my boss and I bought cases and cases whenever we could find the stuff. However we have been on a diet since january and Ive lost about 32 pounds she has lost 60 + she had a baby...anyway and since we had been eating these banana crisps...nothing we stayed the same and even gained. So we became very suspicious so My boss paid 150 bucks to a company called Compu-food in Ohio and off a bag of lovely banana crisps went. Then 10 business days later this is what we were told the results were to our dismay....

Thats more than 4 times the amount of the calories they say they have and the fat grams times 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless we say we called The TJ's regional west coast store in Los Angeles and they said they were aware of the problem they were being retested. And so we returned all of our cases minus the ones in our bodies :-( sorry to say..>I hope they redo them and turn out just as good...

Bananalover -
I too am an avid fan of the banana crisps. I figured, because Trader Joe's put their name on it (it's a private label item), that the nutrition facts would be correct. Although I have felt that sometimes, the bag is a bit greasy. I am also on a diet and have been eating these bags instead of real food sometimes thinking that the entire bag is only 240 calories. If what you are saying is true, that bag has more than 800 calories and 42 grams of fat! Are you serious???? I could have been eating a lot of other things for this amount of calories. Please tell me it isn't true!

Hope everyone is getting to ty these -- too legit to quit :)

Bought 2 bags as soon as these arrived @ our store. Proceeded to eat them both in a weeks time. -I've got to echo the same concern as others have... there is NO WAY the nutritional info on the bag can be right. Right? I've gone back to the store 3 times now... still SOLD OUT. D'oh!

I call it mislabeling, because I would like to believe that TJ's is not intentionally tricking consumers. www.hungry-girl.com, a well known site for diet tips, had subscribers send them lab results done by two independent labs that found these crisps have four times the calories and six times the fat as the label says!!!! It says so at the bottom of the page here, http://www.hungry-girl.com/news/newsdetails.php?isid=916. Some things are too good to be true!
byJencyclopedia, September 18, 2006
I read today (hungrygirl.com) that two labs have tested these and the NI is wrong - four times as many calories and six times as much fat than listed on the label. This has long been speculated about in Weight Watchers and looks like these are too good to be true. I love(d) them but I'll be returning the six bags that I just bought.
byBananalover, September 19, 2006
I was one of the people that sent the lab results to hungry girl. And it was nice to see that they also received a 2nd lab test from someone else. We in fact called trader joes and they said when they first did the test that is the info that they came up with. However I find it hard to believe that there first test was so wrong!! I think since the product is from another country maybe thats where the mislabeling came from...trying to take thai numbers and turn them into american measurements...who knows...

This is a response that a woman on the Weight Watchers board received:Trader Joe's is voluntarily taking off our shelves all banana crisps
due
to a nutritional content mislabeling on the package. The banana crisps
will return shortly once the nutritional panels are updated. Customers
are welcome to return this product to any Trader Joe's location for a

I just wanted to confirm the bad news. I just went to Traders in AZ to pick up some more banana chips and they were all shipped back to the wherehouse due to a "problem" with the labeling. I joked that it must be the calories, but I thought I'd check out what the deal was online. I can't believe that it seems I was right!!! Did anyone see that Seinfeld episode where they were all eating that "no fat" yougurt and were all gaining weight? That's what I feel like - I have been so good on my calorie counting and couldn't understand why I wasn't losing more weight. Who would have thought those nasty little chips were to blame? I feel betrayed!!! I think Traders owes it to us to find a way to keep them at 40 calories......let's sue (jk).

The Banana Crisps have been pulled from the shelves for inaccurate label. Some guessed it is because wrong fat content. Some guessed that it is due to wrong weight.
Hopefully, it will come back to TJ's soon with correct label info. It is a delicious product.

First, after reading all the rave reviews, I stalked out our local TJ's and hounded the manager. Finally, our Sacramento California store loaded up the shelves. I bought 5 bags on the basis that everyone here loved them to death. I thought they were "Okay." They taste exactly like the other banana chips I"ve had in my life. Just less hard. They were VERY sweet to me, not just slightly sweet. After eating half a bag as a snack, I'd had my fill of them. I then stopped eating them for a week or two, and brought in 5-6 chips today with a sandwich. That's it -- any more would be too sweet. So now I read these reviews, and find out that they are not even low calories. Oh vey. I've got 4 bags that I'll likely never finish. I hate being misled like that.
And regarding the seinfeld episode about low fat yogurt that wasn't low fat? Thta wsa based on fact. Many years ago in NY, a vendor was selling the most marvelous low fat shakes and ice cream from his cart. Come to find out, as some suspicious customers pointed out, the NI was all wrong and they were whopping high in calories. He was forced to stop selling -- and the amusing part of the story was, half the customers were MAD he was GONE. They liked the illusion of a low calorie chocolate malt, even after they were told it was'n't low calorie. :)

I live in Folsom and I also had four bags left after the real NI came out. They gladly refunded my money and knew all about the debacle.

I'm an avid Trader Joe's fan. There's a TJ's right across the street from my university so I go there almost every day for lunch or dinner or both. This whole banana crisp thing has made me very suspicious though. I mostly buy the lower calorie products as a means of dieting, but now I'm scared that all of my favorites are poorly labled. The two things that I'm most curious about are the Egg Whites Salad (and the Ranchero egg white salad) and the reduced fat Southwestern Salad. The egg white salad supposedly has only 100 calories in the whole container, but it tastes too good to me... any thoughts?? and the Southwest salad sometimes has so much cheese, corn and beans that I really can't believe there to be only 120 calories (without the dressing, that is).
Does anyone know an inexpensive company that does nutrition analysis? (I live in southern california)

oh man... love these banana chips.
These are amazing! I was in shock when I saw how low in calories they were!
bysnarkmeister, November 1, 2006
They're incredibly bland and just starchy tasting. I didn't get much "banana" flavor at all out of these. Maybe I got a bum bag?
byFoody Goody, December 11, 2006
These are back on the shelf! This time with a whopping 150 calories and 8 grams of fat (cheaply tagged with a little round sticker on the front). How disappointing.
byorphanannie, December 12, 2006
I saw them on the shelf the other day. The nutritional values have been adjusted to reflect the new numbers. Bummer!
