Mochi Ice Cream

Little balls of ice cream (about golf ball size) all wrapped up in a Japanese manju coating. Manju are Japanese confections with a sweet filling and a sort of glutinous outer layer made from mochi, or pounded rice cakes. This same outer layer is what surrounds the ice cream. They're dusted with rice flour so they don't stick to things. These are amazingly good. Trader Joe's usually has them in chocolate, strawberry, green tea, and mango flavors. The green tea and mango ones are excellent. I can take or leave the chocolate and strawberry ones. They come six to a package and are a little pricey for what you get, but they're so good they're worth it.

6 to a box and they are nothing special. Do you eat them with a spoon or by hand? If you eat by hand they are super cold or else they melt.

I like the strawberry and mango ones and I eat them after they have been room temp for a minute or two. These bad boys can get hard as a rock!

Fun to eat as a dessert hors d'oeuvre...

I love mochi icecream. I love green tea icecream. I like these.

I've had better, I've had worse.

Truth is, unless you have a dedicated Japanese grocer or eat out, you'll be hard pressed to beat it.

Again, it's not BAD... it's, at worse, substandard for TJ.

Fun to eat and the strawberry ones taste like Pocky!

Best prices around at trader Joe's. Best to eat it ASAP because when you store it for too long, the mochi layer becomes to hard.

I've tried the Green Tea, Strawberry, and Mango versions. Strawberry and Mango are the creamiest, but I'd recommend all three. Like rubywong said, don't keep them too long. I had to throw a box out once because they got too hard and dry.

I really did like the chocolate ones. The outside coating reminded me of a brownie a little.

And I know exactly how many calories I ate (instead of eating half a gallon of ice cream!)
