Re:Working PT at TJ's - 2008/07/24 20:04 thanks. they are totally missing out. I don't get it, but maybe it just wasn't meant to be.

The supervisor (Steven) under Paul (captain) and Brian (first mate) was the one that called me and broke the news to me. He made it sound like it wasn't his decision, and he really regretted breaking the news to me. I asked for feedback and he couldn't really give any that made sense; something about not "pulling my weight" taking the trucks at night. I don't buy that one bit. I'm a bigger guy and I'm not Hercules, but I'm not weak... so that didn't make any sense. In the interview, Paul didn't say much at all and let Brian and Steve do all the talking. That was a tad nerve-wracking. Brian and Steven seemed to like me quite a bit. I am awesome with customers, and they could tell and insisted that customer service was #1. It's so cliche and I don't find it to be very true at this store. The employees are nice but they seem to largely keep to themselves or each other. I'm all about having fun with customers and you'd think that would be first and foremost. My impression is that Paul just didn't get a great vibe from me. I had been calling him and bugging him somewhat regularly for a year, so it can't be enthusiasm or persistance that impresses him much. I will admit to feeling a bit timid around him just because I wanted to work for him so badly.

ugh.

Re:Working PT at TJ's - 2008/07/25 19:58 Really to bad. It seems that at my store, the attitude towards customer service is paramount. We've had, (and still do) have some people that barely carry their weight. It seems that every Capt. has their own way of judging potential crew members. Sounds like you would fit in at 604, and we're losing a couple of crew members in a month or two. Film first,I bleed D-76.

Re:Working PT at TJ's - 2008/11/04 06:39 I never realized how hard it is to get a job at tjs. i was lucky because I was hired at 16 as a bagger and there wasn't any competition. at the store I'm at now there are at least 5 people that come in a day to get an application. we have boxes and boxes but hardly hire that much. (it's a college town so there are lots of poor students needing jobs) and i agree 100% with the lack of leadership. I cant wait till this one full timer gets transfered. At my store most of the problems are due to lack of communication. It is very frustrating. and i hate to admit it but since ive been capped out i hardly carry my weight.. oops. (p.s. we are one of the only tjs with a security guard and a passcode for the bathroom...we had to replace the toilets at least twice now from all the needles clogging em up!)

Woah, I hope I never get transferred to a store like that! I know someone who worked at one of our stores in a somewhat run-down area of the big city and the stories she told me..... er, no thanks.

About "customer service being #1": Yes, customer service at TJ's is #1 in the sense that you go the extra mile in helping your customers get what they came for and that you have a pleasant if not cheerful attitude when helping them.

That said, I think some folks who apply for a job at Trader Joe's believe that when TJ's talks about customer service, what the company means by that is that they are looking for people who are good with customers in the checkstand. These prospective TJ's employees seem to think their best and most marketable quality is that they can carry an upbeat conversation with customers at the checkstand or when they bump into a customer in the aisle.

The reality (at my store, at least) is that full-timers (i.e., management) first and foremost are looking for people that hustle when working. It's really not so much about what goes on in the checkstand. It's a lot more about what goes on when the truck arrives with the load (i.e., the delivery of product) and what goes on when the crew stocks the shelves. Keep your head down, and keep moving. Don't stand around and socialize three times a day (or even two).

I probably told the three TJ's full-timers who interviewed me for the job that I thought one of my strengths was that I was "good with people," but I realize now that that didn't mean a whole lot. They probably hear that from just about everyone.

Re:Working PT at TJ's - 2008/11/16 02:06 Yes customers do come first, but any one with half a brain will realize, that a big piece of the customer service is getting them in, and out in a timely manner, and to make sure the shelves are as well stocked as posible. I've been with TJs for almost 5 years, and I've never had a problem balancing the two. Sure, I have customers that I also consider friends, and they always fully understand that if I'm pushing a hand truck, or flat cart full of product, that I probably won't have a chance to chat for too long. You can hustle, and still be customer orientated. Film first,I bleed D-76.
