Applying at TJ's.. Tips? - 2008/08/16 04:35 Hi there!
I am a die-hard TJ's fan and I am going to apply at the one here in VA!! It would be the most perfect job for me- I know I could bring alot to the team! Anyway- I was just wondering does anyone have any tips for me that might help me get the job!? I'm going in the next few days to turn in my resume, I'm so excited! Any input would be awesome! thanks so much!! :)

PS: I really want to be Food Demonstrator, but a crew member would be really perfect too!

Re:Applying at TJ's.. Tips? - 2008/08/16 17:45 Which Virginia store are you applying to, Richmond or Williamsburg? A full timer friend is moving from California to Richmond, Shirley, and starts working September 1.

Be enthusiastic and loud, if you are going for Food Demonstrator. By loud, I mean you should be able to project your voice if someone asks you a question. Others around the area should be able to hear you. Food Demonstrator no longer requires you to be a great cook, but be able to put 2-3 TJ's items together for demo.

Re:Applying at TJ's.. Tips? - 2008/08/16 18:12 Best of luck. I've been at TJs in NJ for almst 5 years, and I love it. Resumes don't mean as much at TJs as they might at another store. The things we look at are attitude, and availability. Attitude meaning willinness to do any, and all tasks. There are no "cashiers" at TJs, we all do everything. From ringing on register to cleaning the bathrooms, and every thing in between .And for goodness sake read the application carefully. There is a part in it that states that you need to be able to lift, and handle certain amounts of weight. We've had a couple of people get hired, just to decide that the work wes "to hard". Availability is another biggy. At our store we have staff in as early as 5 AM, and as late as midnight. new hires don't usually get thrown right into tha extremes, but they will change your shift around, usually to see where you fit in best. If they hire you (hope so)have fun. It's not rocket science, but the pay, and benefits are great. I'm alo lucky, as the vast majority of the crew, and the customers at my store are really wonderful people. Again, good luck. Film first,I bleed D-76.

Re:Applying at TJ's.. Tips? - 2008/08/16 18:31 One of the big things to let them know is your availability: the more open you are with your schedule the more likely you are to get shifts and that's a good thing.

If you are interested in demo, make sure you show off your food knowledge. I am a culinary school grad as well as a lot of sales background and customer service so it's a great mutual fit for TJs and me. No, you don't need to be a great cook, but people ask all the time "how long do I cook this" or "what else can you do with that" - so some culinary creativity and know-how is involved.

Keep in mind that everyone is hired as a "crew member" regardless of what you are doing that day, or even hour to hour. You need to be flexible with cashiering to stocking shelves to bringing in wine to making the coffee. Flexibility is key! My resume was never brought into the mix, just the application and interview. And as Zed said, ATTITUDE and willingness/ability to take direction. Be cheerful, smile a lot but still be yourself.
