Get ready epicures: Trader Joe’s is coming to Cary.
The discount gourmet store beloved by many on the West Coast and points eastward confirmed Tuesday that it is scheduled to open a Cary location in the Shoppes of Kildaire shopping center this year.

“There’s a ton of foodies there,” said Alison Mochizuki, Trader Joe’s national publicity director. “It seems like a really great city for us to be in.”

Trader Joe’s submitted plans to upfit the former Winn-Dixie space and use 18,725 square feet, said Bob Strowbridge, Cary’s director of Inspections & Permits.

Regency Centers, which handles leasing for Shoppes of Kildaire, shows on its Web site that the space has a total of 44,000 square feet.

Strowbridge did not know who prospective tenants for the remainder of the space might be.

Trader Joe’s started in California in the late 1950s and now has more than 250 stores in 20 states. Its reputation has developed because of low prices on its 2,000 products that range from beer and wine to cheeses to herbs, trail mixes and snacks. Many items, such as the Charles Shaw “Two Buck Chuck” wines (reds and whites ranging from $1.99 to $3.39 per bottle), are available only at Trader Joe’s or bear store labels.

According to Hoover’s, an online affiliate of business-research giant Dun & Bradstreet, Trader Joe’s is owned by German billionaires Karl and Theo Albrecht, who also own the Aldi food chain

Re:North Carolina? - 2006/12/05 16:38 The Cary store is wonderful! Ah, to have my beloved Joe's again!

My wife composed a long poem to Joe's 3 years ago ("Ode to Trader Joe's"), begging them to come to the Triangle. Got a letter from the Vice President of the company. Finally, we have them! A 45 minute drive for us (from Carrboro, NC), but well worth it.

Now we're hoping they make good on the Chapel Hill/Durham store.

Re:North Carolina? - 2007/03/01 13:37 I actually got confirmation from the folks at the Cary store that the Chapel Hill location will open before the end of the year. I cannot wait! I hear it is opening where the Earth Fare was located...sorry they did not make it, but TJs will be most welcome!
