Fig Cake w/Apricot Kernels = POISON - 2006/07/14 05:34 I just purchased Trader Joe's "Fig Cake w/Apricot Kernels" (in a 9-ounce round, plastic container), at their store in San Francisco (555 9th St.). When I got home, something bothered me about the apricot kernels...didn't I read somewhere that they contain toxic levels of cyanide (like peach pits)?

So I searched the web, and sure enough, they ARE highly poisonous. Need proof? Look at these articles:

Acute Cyanide Toxicity Caused By Apricot Kernel Ingestion

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=9832674&query_hl=1

Nutrition: Raw Food Toxins

http://www.rawveg.info/rawfoodtoxins.html

Quoting from the first article: "A 41-year-old woman ingested apricot kernels purchased at a health food store and became weak and dyspneic within 20 minutes. The patient was comatose and hypothermic on presentation but responded promptly to antidotal therapy for cyanide poisoning."

(BTW, "dyspneic" means "Not breathing or able to breathe except with difficulty.")

The apricot kernels in this Trader Joe's product are listed as RAW, making them the MOST possibly toxic, when compared to cooking them. (Though they may STILL be toxic, after cooking.)

I called the store bought it from, and I hope they take that product off the shelves PROMPTLY. (I also contacted Trader Joe's via their main phone number, 626-599-3817.

Re:Fig Cake w/Apricot Kernels = POISON - 2006/07/14 18:19 This is not worthy of a recall and a risk anyone should take when trying to do a raw diet. The toxins that are in the kernels are naturally occuring just like arsenic is present in almost everything. Should trader joes recall all foods that might have allergic reactions to people, that could kill them too!!

So prove me wrong, Junkyard...eat those apricot kernels yourself! Or better yet: why not make yourself a cup of tea with peach leaves?

You are trivializing the urgency of this matter, as the level of cyanide is way high in apricot kernels as to be a real danger to MOST people, not just a few. Peach leaves also contain more than enough cyanide to KILL several people with just a handful of steeped tea leaves.

I have contacted 7 on your side, as well as various other consumer agencies, in order to STOP Trader Joe's from a great tragedy and consequent lawsuit. "No good deed goes unpunished", and "Kill the messenger" are two old sayings which seem to clearly apply here. I have since POSTED my warning to my web log at

I will likely begin distributing warning flyers at the store, if nothing is soon done to remove this product from the shelves.

Arsenic may indeed be present in very low (harmless) levels in many things...but the evidence shows that apricot kernels, peach leaves, and even apple seeds contain MORE than enough cyanide to seriously harm or kill a person. Here's an intriguing quote for ya:

An " 8-ounce bag of apricot kernels purchased by the patient could kill up to 6 adults if consumed at one sitting." That's from the site;

Cyanide Poisoning From Apricot Kernels
http://www.personalmd.com/news/a1998120903.shtml

For further proof, check out this article:

Apricot kernels withdrawn over cyanide concern

Guess what else: TJ's label on this product says the apricot kernels are from Turkey. Certainly not a country I would trust for its food standards.

Again, I DARE you to eat those apricot kernels in a public venue VIDEOTAPED for the world to see...just to show your cocksure CONFIDENCE in your adoration of TJ's. Bon apetit!

P.S.: Any people who suffer or die from eating TJ's apricot kernels will be on your conscience forever.

Really? Anyone who dies from that is Junkyard Dog's fault? Wow...who knew?

Butter= Poison=Apricots - 2006/08/10 07:11 "A number of other cyanogenic glycosides are present in foods including linamarin (cassava, lima beans), prunasin (ferns) and sambunigrin (elderberries)."

"Bitter apricot kernels have recently become available as a health food on the UK market. As well as bitter apricot kernels, low levels of cyanide are also present in almonds, sweet apricot kernels and in the stones of other fruits such as cherries."

Also in both the website listed they use lots of averages and may but no where does it say that apricot kernels will kill you. So if it eat lots of almonds, elderberries or lima beans will I die or have that on my conscious? Personally, I don't like apricots or the kernels and could care less if what happens to the people that ingest them. I also know that eating a high sugar and fat diet will lead people to have diabetes and heart disease and I don't care about that either. Personally, I only care about my own health and diet and what others want to ingest or intake, it is up to them.

Re:Fig Cake w/Apricot Kernels = POISON - 2006/09/30 14:34 They have sold this product for at least 5-6 years. It is only carried durring the holiday season.

You are right, must be a real health hazzard.

You better not drink the water or breath the air eaither.

Go get a life.
