Arsenic in TJ's chicken - 2006/04/05 20:36 Today's NY Times article ("Chicken With Arsenic? Is That O.K.?" 05Apr06) reports that some chicken producers add arsenic to their chicken feed.

TJ's chicken (as well as some other companies', like Perdue) tested positive to arsenic but the company doesn't comment on this article.

Does anybody know which chicken from TJ might be considered safe and which one is better to avoid?

I'm sure TJ is goig to tell us that arsenic in their chicken is below FDA approved limits, but after having read how toxic arsenic is I'd like to avoid it as much as possible.

Re:Arsenic in TJ's chicken - 2006/04/18 17:22 What is the reason they put arsenic in the feed? I know why they put hormones and antibiotics in beef cattle feed, and why there is mercury in fish, but why purposely add a poison to the chicken feed, what does it do?

Re:Arsenic in TJ's chicken - 2006/04/19 17:34 I believe it keeps the feed from spoiling (think of it as a preservative for chicken feed).
The IATP report is actually very informative.

I personally find very disturbing that TJ doesn't comment on the article and hopes that the issue goes away by itself: my collegue - who has three kids and is very concerned about what they eat - called TJ spokeperson and all they could say was that "TJ's chicken meets FDA limits".
Unfortunately we all know that those limits are quite loose; what's the point of buying antibiotic and hormone free chicken (both FDA approved, by the way) if we get arsenic in our chicken?

Re:Arsenic in TJ's chicken - 2006/04/19 23:51 if you read the article, it never once states that Arsnic was FOUND in TJ's chicken, it jsut stated that it was one of the lines of products tested..

come on, you have seen how quickly they have pulled items of a shelf for even a hint of "might be's"...

Re:Arsenic in TJ's chicken - 2006/04/20 16:09 The report seems quite clear to me: the TJ's chicken they tested contained levels of arsenic higher than what can be considered normal occurrence in nature. So, yes: "ARSENIC WAS FOUND" in their chicken, at levels higher than many other brands.

I am a happy TJ's customer, I really love their products and I shop there regularly, but after this arsenic thing I did some research and I don't know what you are referring to but I've found other interesting stories, not last the one about how long it took them to introduce cage-free eggs.

I want to trust them and trust the food they sell, but I find a bit disturbing that rather than trying to explain why arsenic was found in their chicken, they hid behind the "inside the FDA limits" statement.
I'm sorry but FDA limits are not good enough for me, and I guess for many other customers.

Re:Arsenic in TJ's chicken - 2006/06/21 00:43 arsenic is also in drinking water from the tap and many other things that people consume on a daily basis...
